Creativity is a huge topic, so one of the ways I’m tackling the process of narrowing everything down is by running a survey. I worked on these questions over the summer, when the IRB (Institutional Review Board), wanted to see a copy of the questions that I’d be asking participants, but I fine-tuned them when I came back to school this semester. I created it using Qualtrics and piloted it on my classmates. After I got some preliminary results back, I realized that some of the questions weren’t exactly addressing my survey goals, which are below:
- Get a sense of what projects people are working on
- Where the idea comes from for their projects
- What other personal projects they’d like to work on (but don’t have the time)
- Get interviewees for future research sessions
- See what frustrations people have with how they are creative
- Attitude towards creativity and their life
- Tools people are using
So, I went back in and tweaked some of them. For example, one of the questions I had before was “Complete this sentence: If I had the time, I would work on a personal project towards…” but I ended up getting some pretty broad answers like “changing the world”. After discussing it with my advisor, Stacie, we decided that it might be helpful to give people a visual reference indicating the amount of detail I was looking for. I ended up adding this image to the question:

After spending some time going over the questions again, I needed to get the survey out to the masses. My brother (an expert at social media) told me to set up a Facebook invite and “invite” friends to take the survey. Incredibly, it worked out really well, and it was exciting to see people “going” to the event and watching the responses come in. Now comes the momentous task of analyzing the survey data and coding the responses. Stay tuned…
